Alibaba became the major unchallenged force in the Chinese e-commerce. They realized this with careful development of its platform and regular addition of new services that ease online shopping for the customer, like transport and payment.

The company is always acquiring new companies to grow itself, from video and news providers to offline services and overseas companies that could prove a challenge in the e-commerce business. As this year ends here are some of its most famous takeovers:

Lazada – This Southeast Asian company was one of the biggest acquisition Jack Ma made, looking to repeat in this region what he did at home. His trend of turning success from what he build from scratch he’s targeting more than half of sales from outside the home market.

Youku Tudou – A video streaming company that was worth 5 billion dollars it’s Alibaba’s largest acquisition to date and it’s intended for the generation of marketing and advertisement content. This was a critical buy for Ma , as rivals Tencent and Baidu also pushed into this area and after he created Alibaba Pictures Group.

Sunning Commerce The takeover of this electronic retailer increased Alibaba’s reach across China and beyond the cities.

Jasper Infotech – The creators of Snapdeal created a foothold for Alibaba in India, a growing market that reminds of China ten years ago.

Meizu – The acquisition of a smartphone creator like Meizu, eases Alibaba’s plan to put its own YunOS operating system on as many brands of smartphones as possible.

South China Morning Post – The oldest English speaking newspaper in Hong Kong gives them political clout and a way in into traditional media.
