U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus is known for giving controversial names to new ships, but a new one proposed by a petition delivered to the White House might be too unconventional even for him.
This petition argues that “to honor those citizens who rose up to defend America and the Constitution from the globalists” the new major American warship should be christened ‘USS The Deplorables’.
The name comes from a quote made by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, which she made during a speech in the campaign, referring to Donald Trump’s supporters.
‘You know, just to be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorable’, she said during a speech in September. ‘The racist, sexist, homophobic, Islamophobic – you name it. And, unfortunately, there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.”
Clinton has since apologized for the remark, but the term was adapted by Trump’s camp and used as a rallying cry in his campaign and may have pushed him to the win. Now it seems that some of his fans and voters want the next Navy warships to be “deplorable” as well.
The petition, launched on December 4th has received just 768 votes a long way away from the 100,000 needed by January 3 next year to have an official response from the White House.
David Winkler, director of programs at the Naval Historical Foundation have said to FoxNews.com that “My gut reaction when I hear about this was, “Would you like to be a sailor deployed on a ship called the USS The Deplorables? Do you think someone would really want to say, ‘Look at that ship out there – it’s deplorable?.”
