On Sunday night, at the 74th edition of the Golden Globes, Meryl Streep delivered a powerful and emotional speech as she received the Cecile B. DeMille award for her entire career.
She weighed on how Trump is bad for America without even having to say his name. “Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence invites violence,” were the actress’ words.
After that, Trump took to his Twitter account to slam the actress. In the series of tweets, he called her “over-rated” and that she attacked him without even knowing him.
Streep said that a moment Trump mocked a disabled reporter really shocked her. The president-elect responded to the claim, saying: “Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never “mocked” a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him…….”
He also calls out the media for being dishonest.
Trump used to admire Streep before. In 2015, he said that she is an “excellent” actress and a “fine person”.
Since Trump lashed out like that, many celebrities weighed in. Barbra Streisand said Meryl Streep’s speech was beautiful and she agrees with her. “What we need more in this world is kindness and common decency, and how he reacts and how he has the need to talk back and insult anybody who doesn’t agree with him, that’s pretty disgraceful,” said Streisand.
George Clooney also talked about it: “She’s one of, if not the most, overrated actress of all time. But seriously, aren’t you supposed to be running the country?” He hopes for the best for his country now.
Many people have expressed their feelings on Trump’s reaction on social media. Other celebrities also responded.
